LinkedIn 101: The Basics

What is LinkedIn?

LinkedIn is a professional networking website; its purpose is for professionals to connect and recommend people.  Essentially, it provides an easier platform to keep up with your contacts, instead of shuffling through a pile of business cards, you can use your keyboard. LinkedIn is also a great place to meet other professionals in your industry; joining groups or being introduced to contacts by people in your immediate circle are just two of the many options available to reach out and build a stronger network.

The language

Like other social media platforms, LinkedIn has its own jargon; below you’ll find a list of defined terms that will help you understand this medium!

Groups: A group is a discussion board based on a specific interest. The purpose of a group varies depending on their type (networking, alumni, professional, not-for-profit etc). Groups are a great way to meet other professionals in similar industries or with similar interests. Some groups require permission and specific qualifications to become a member, whereas others are open and available for anyone to join.

Company Pages: A company page is like a directory page. It’s an opportunity for professionals to outline their businesses and the services/products they offer.


1st degree: People in your immediate circle of connections, these might be fellow co-workers, previous clients and contacts you’ve networked with in the past. 


2nd degree: People in your ‘extended network’, in other words a friend of a friend. You can find these connections while looking through a contact’s connections or searching with specific keywords. LinkedIn allows you to connect with these people as long as you have their email or are affiliated with them on a business level


3rd degree: People outside of your extended network,  these people are not connected with you or with the people in your network. Unless you upgrade your LinkedIn account, you cannot send an invite. However, you can reach out to 3rd degree connections if you are a part of the same group

The Profile

Your profile is what you’re presenting to the LinkedIn world. Ideally, it should showcase the value you offer and provide testimonials and endorsements to validate your services.

Your LinkedIn profile can be divided into four different categories:

  • Headshot
  • Headline
  • Showcase
  • Endorsements

Each category adds its own unique purpose to your profile and deserves the right amount of attention.
